Book Review: The Angel by Tiffany Reisz

From Goodreads:
No safe word can protect the heart
Infamous erotica author and accomplished dominatrix Nora Sutherlin is doing something utterly out of character: hiding. While her longtime lover, Søren—whose fetishes, if exposed, would be his ruin—is under scrutiny pending a major promotion, Nora's lying low and away from temptation in the lap of luxury.

Her host, the wealthy and uninhibited Griffin Fiske, is thrilled to have Nora stay at his country estate, especially once he meets her traveling companion. Young, inexperienced and angelically beautiful, Michael has become Nora's protégé, and this summer with Griffin is going to be his training, where the hazing never ends.

But while her flesh is willing, Nora's mind is wandering. To thoughts of Søren, her master, under investigation by a journalist with an ax to grind. And to another man from Nora's past, whose hold on her is less bruising, but whose secrets are no less painful. It's a summer that will prove the old adage: love hurts.

The Angel is the second in Tiffany Reisz's Original Sinners series, and a much darker one than The Siren.  I felt that, although Nora and Zach both struggled with their own issues  in the first book, it was had a much lighter tone.    The Angel is much different.  And I will warn you.  The worlds of Catholicism and BDSM cross paths and many people will probably find this to be offensive.  At first, it really bothered me.  And Søren is not at all likeable in The Siren, but the more we discover about him...the harder it is to dislike him.  He is a very respected priest and a handsome sadist, as well as The 8th Circle's most feared Dominant.  And the man who has captured Nora's soul.  In this book, we learn more and more about his past and who he really is...but we are still left with many questions about who he TRULY is.

The book centers around a journalist who is investigating Søren's church, and who seems to be a threat to his position as well as Nora's reputation.    She is sent away with a young submissive in training, Michael, to spend time at Griffin Fiske's estate.  Griffin is a trust-fund baby and a Dominant, a former lover of Nora's and I just love him.  I mean, he wears a kilt and Doc Martin's and is covered in ink.  How sexy is that?

I think my favorite relationship in the novel is Michael and Griffin's.  I won't go into details because I don't want to spoil it, but you can not help but love these two and want them to be together.  Griffin is so protective of Michael and I love the fact that Michael, who is so damaged in The Siren and the beginning of The Angel, has found someone to love him FOR HIM.

Of course, we also spend time with Kingsley Edge and he is another one that I just love.  There is definitely many layers to him and slowly, those layers are being peeled away.  And who doesn't love the fact that he prances around in Victorian dress coats and riding boots??

I love these characters and each book reveals something new...without revealing much at a time.  Tiffany Reisz has admit that she LOVES to mindfuck her readers.  And she is damn good at the mindfuck.

Is flu season over yet??

Seriously.  I can't take it anymore.  The moment we are in the clear, WHAM, another family member gets it. C and I were down for the count starting Saturday night/Sunday morning.  A was home on Tuesday from school, although didn't actually puke, and J bolted to the bathroom at 5:15 AM and is bed-bound today.

UGH.  Is it spring yet??

Pantry Challenge, Week 3 Update

I spent $132.67 on groceries from Sunday to Saturday for Week 3. Then we ordered pizza ($33) so our weekly total is $165.67 and our month to date total is $414.50. This INCLUDES ordering out once a week for the last three weeks, so if I don’t count that, we are coming in right around $324 which I am SUPER happy with!!  I honestly am okay with spending the amount that I am because, since I do not have the time to do a TON of freezer cooking, this challenge at least makes me conscious of how much I am spending and on what.

Each week I say we are NOT going to eat out.  Then we do, usually because by Thursday or Friday, I am so over cooking and doing dishes that I want to eat out of containers and throw everything instead of washing pans.    I can't kick myself about it, but I know that we should not be spending this money.  I am going to try REALLY hard to prep up some pizza dough so we can through that together on Friday if we want.  Or have something easy on hand for those days I just do NOT want to cook.

Week 1: $134.70
Week 2: $114.13

Week 3: $165.67
Month to Date: $414.50

CSA Winter Week 7

According to Trevor, the awesome guy who runs our CSA through Fresh Fork Market, this week is a turning point in the winter CSA.  We have pretty much run out of field crops so we will start getting more frozen items, meat, cheeses, and pantry staples.  I am okay with that because I have a really hard time using our greens up and we are all over the kale!!  Although Daphne Oz just did what looked like a yummy lentil soup on The Chew with kale and I wanted to try it.

Winter Week 7:
1 pack pork loin chops, boneless 2 count (I bought a second so we will have pork chops this week)
1 lb grassfed ground beef (Philly Cheesesteak  Sloppy Joe's, here we come)
1 dozen eggs
1 stalk brussels sprouts (will use these as a side dish
1 head napa cabbage (I am thinking a Thai Chicken salad; Napa cabbage is so expensive, so this is great)
1 lb carrots (going to make soup on Sunday)
1 bag mustard greens (the bain of my existence)(and I think we got kale anyway!)
1 bunch green onions (the deer ate the green onions, so we got beans instead.  I think it is time to use my ham hock for some ham and  bean soup)
2 lbs cornmeal (will probably make chili and cornbread this weekend)
3 lbs yukon gold potatoes (potato and leek soup, I think!)
2 acorn squash (now I have four to use up!)
1 quarter peck apples, melrose (red) and granny smith (yellow/green)
1 bag mixed salad greens (I never know what to do with these.  They are kind of bitter, but I will toss them into a salad)

This is a nice week because there is not a TON of greens, but I will be able to use the kale in either a chip form or in that soup.  And we signed up for the LARGE Summer CSA so, between our expanded garden (more on that soon!) we really won't be needing to purchase much produce!

Book Review: The Siren by Tiffany Reisz

From Goodreads:
Notorious Nora Sutherlin is famous for her delicious works of erotica, each one more popular with readers than the last. But her latest manuscript is different—more serious, more personal—and she's sure it'll be her breakout book...if it ever sees the light of day.

Zachary Easton holds Nora's fate in his well-manicured hands. The demanding British editor agrees to handle the book on one condition: he wants complete control. Nora must rewrite the entire novel to his exacting standards—in six weeks—or it's no deal.

Nora's grueling writing sessions with Zach are draining…and shockingly arousing. And a dangerous former lover has her wondering which is more torturous—staying away from him...or returning to his bed?

Nora thought she knew everything about being pushed to your limits. But in a world where passion is pain, nothing is ever that simple.

This summer, post-Fifty Shades and Gabriel's Inferno/Rapture, I was scouring the internet, looking for my next read.  I spend quite a bit of time during Logan's naps on the patio with my Kindle and it is necessary I read before bed.  While looking through my Twitter feed, I saw that The Siren was recommended for those who had read Fifty Shades.    I did not shy away from the fact that it was labeled BDSM/erotica, so decided to give it a whirl.

Let me tell you.

I was speechless.

I thought this was truly going to be a love story between Nora and Zach.  But I think it is a love story between the reader and Nora.  We meet her as she NEEDS her next erotic novel to be a hit, and Zach is there to try and help her get there, albeit reluctantly.  The sexual tension is there between the two of them, but it just is not the focus of the book, which is the difference between The Siren and Fifty Shades.  We are given a look into the world of BDSM and to be honest, it was really eye-opening.  Reisz truly knows what the lifestyle is like, and she treats it with respect and uses the format of her beautiful novel to tell the reader what it really is all about.  What it is like to be who you truly are without being ashamed (which is a running theme throughout the next two novels in the series as well).

As for the novel being erotica, this about sums it up:
"I know people think erotica is just a romance novel with rougher sex.  It's not.  If it's a subgenre of
     anything, it's horror."
     "Horror?  Really?"
"Romance is sex plus love.  Erotica is sex plus fear."

And I think this is truthful.  People may be afraid of this book because of the BDSM subject matter.  But Tiffany Reisz pulls you in with her characters, her story, and her words.  You fall in love with Nora and truly want her to be HAPPY.  Reisz sheds a whole new light on this lifestyle.  Her writing strips you bare and leaves you wanting more.   And the other characters?  There is an ache to find out their histories, as well as what is to come for them.

The story will leave you breathless and heartbroken and wanting more.  Step out of your comfort zone, because you won't regret it.

Pantry Challenge, Week 2

Week 2 of the Pantry Challenge is done!

For a recap, here is how we did Week 1 and to see what we are eating, check out my dinner log!

Honestly, we have been doing pretty well.  I am keeping the stops at the store to a minimum but once again, I gave in to the temptation to eat out.  Here are the totals for Week 2:

Thursday night's to-go meal: $35.25
Produce and misc at the local market: $19.19
Fresh Fork CSA: $25
Target (snacks, cereal, etc): $34.69

We get another produce bag on Friday and I can't wait to find out what is in it.  I lucked out this week because I did not do my grocery shopping until Sunday afternoon so it goes on Week 3's total :)  Sneaky, sneaky!!

Week 1: $134.70
Week 2: $114.13
Month to Date: $248.83

Winter CSA Week 6

I have missed a few weeks of posting about our CSA, but I am kind of stumped with this bag, so I thought I would put it out there.

Obviously, since we are not getting a ton of produce, we are getting other great products!!  This week's bag consisted of:

  • 1 whole chicken (I roasted it last Sunday)
  • 1/2 lb kale (on the menu for Spicy Kale lasagna this weekend)
  • 2 acorn squash
  • 1 lb watermelon radishes (no clue what to do with these)
  • 2 lbs turnips (again, at a loss)
  • 1 lb onions
  • 1 lb carrots
  • 1 lb beets (will give to my friend)
  • 1 dozen eggs
  • 8 oz pepper havarti (OMG so good)
Last time we picked up, I bought an additional dozen eggs and another roll of butter because it is so good.  I need to get a butter crock so I can keep the butter on the table.

I am having a hard time using the greens up, though, and often they are discovered having gone bad in the fridge.  I am trying to be more diligent about it though, so I hope by the end of the winter I stop letting that happen!!

Unrelated, but I am so over winter and snow.  I am ready to get out and plant my garden this year!!

Menu Planning Monday (Late Night Style)

As you know, I am participating in a Pantry Challenge over at Good Cheap Eats.  My goal is to spend as little as possible each week and to clear out our freezer and pantry.

Monday: Angel hair pasta with pesto and diced tomatoes
Tuesday: Unstuffed Pepper Soup with crusty bread
Wednesday: Spicy Kale Lasagna
Thursday: BLTs and baked potatoes
Friday: Pizza night

I also made spicy black bean and sweet potato burritos for my lunches that I put in the freezer.

Pantry Challenge, Week 1 Update

Time to check in for the first week of our pantry challenge!!

So far, I have cleared out some room in our freezer but I am still adding things (I made a batch of black beans in the crock pot this week) to it!  I am hoping to be a little more creative this week and use up more of the veggies in the freezer.  I have a head of cauliflower and quite a few peppers to think of something creative to do with.  I also defrosted the sugar cookie dough I had in there and I hope to make some cut-outs tomorrow while I am home with Logan, before his doctor's appointment.

Spending so far:
Fresh Fork Market Winter CSA: $25
Groceries:
We needed milk, school lunch supplies, trash bags...pretty much everything.  My goal was to stay under $75 and I managed to come in at $70.56
McDonald's on Friday: 23.18
Quick run for some impromptu ice cream on Monday: 15.96
TOTAL for Week 1: $134.70

What I learned:  We absolutely can not eat out this week.  I conned C to purchase ice cream while he was out buying sinus meds because I had a bad day at work and was cranky.  And the McDonald's?  Gross.  I am also hoping that this weekend, we will only need a few staples, such as milk and bread.

The Pantry Challenge!

This year, one of my resolutions is to truly watch our grocery budget.  Too often, we are making random trips to the store and I believe we are spending  way too much on groceries.  Once again, Good Cheap Eats is offering up a pantry challenge.  I attempted it last year and my goals are pretty much staying the same.  I also kept a log but if you look back, about half-way through the month I fell off the wagon.  Fingers crossed I can work it better this year!!

So, the goals for the pantry challenge?
1.  Spend $600 or less on groceries this month.
2.  Continue to make healthier food choices.

I am very much looking forward to eating down our pantry!
